Summary/Abstract: In 1895 the Society of Dutch Archivists elected a triumvirate to write guidelines for the arrangement and description. Muller, Feith and Fruin were elected. So in 1898 they wrote and published their Manual for the arrangement and description of archives. The Manual was translated and adapted for archivists in Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, France, USA, England and other. Thanks to the Manual and its translations the principle of provenance was accepted throughout the world. Muller, Feith and Fruin are to be remembered as founding fathers of modern archivology, but also as representatives of different views of archivist’s work: the archivist as historian, the archivist as righteous go-between, the archivist as manager.
