Summary/Abstract: The genre of the self-portrait in the Bulgarian painting has its short but meaningful history. This article examines self-portraits as a mutually preconditioned interconnection between public and intimate. Bulgarian artists had created exceptionally qualitative private-confessional portraits. But together with the deeply intimate source, the normativity of the public representation of the subjective sphere of the author had been pointed out. Short analyses of works from several decades of the Twentieth century reveal the differences in representation of intimate and public. The appearance of series of ironic self-portraits by Liuben Zidarov from the seventies is especially clear. A recent example of the new, not yet established correlation between intimacy an publicity is the performance of the artists Adelina Popnedeleva and Venceslav Zankov from 2004.
