Summary/Abstract: The following article is concerned with the topic of the famous, acute ‘war of the pens’ which took place between 1776 and 1778 due to satiric literary performances of Tomasz Kajetan Węgierski. The main material of the analysis consisted of selected letters written by adversaries and followers of the described poet. The contents of the above letters was a very good evidence of motivation which was essential for giving opinion about T.K. Węgierski and his poetic workshop by his ‘pen-followers’ and ‘pen-opponents’. During the analysis the most important issue to analyze were methods used by them to express their optimism or pessimism towards the young poet. The main background of the above analysis was outlined by the presence of the poetic letter genre in the literature of Enlightenment, accented by its role in literature and specification of the lampoon and the libel as a literary genre.
