Summary/Abstract: Keith Hitchins’ study on the early stages of the formation of the Romanian nation is built around political events, those which give theoretical support to articulating the sense that the American historian invests into the birth of the Romanian nation. The choice of his operational concepts meets the manner of the study set forth: he is interested in people and institutions, in examining the administrative reorganization, in the extensive reform, in the assessment of economic and political development and spectacular inventory of mutations in mentality (the undermining of relations such as suzerain-vassal, asserting the right to self-determination, of the idea of nation as an ethnic community, the innovative appearance of the economy, the incessant progress of the political forms, economic models and cultural achievements of Western values).
