Exit to Europe: Popular Music and Political Identity in Contemporary Serbia

Summary/Abstract: Marina Simic deconstructs the taken for granted paradigm by witch “two Serbias”, one rural, primitive and nationalistic, the other, urban, modern, and proeuropean reflect in two forms of music- turbo folk and rock. She analyses the discourses that lie behind this binary opposition showing that it is reductionistic and inadequate for understanding the problem of identity.
