THE ABBOT OF DUBROVNIK ANTUN, CAN. SIVRIĆ POET, TRANSLATOR AND LINGUIST

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with Rev. Antun Sivrić, a priest of the (arch)diocese of Dubrovnik, and an abbot and canon in the Illyrian (Croatian) Institute of St. Jerome in Rome, whose ancestors came from Mostar to Dubrovnik in the late 17th and the early 18th centuries. By a decision of the Senate in 1765 his father was elected to the Confraternity of St. Lazarus (“Lazarini”), becoming so a citizen of Dubrovnik (Civis Ragusinus) with the right of succession. In his priestly vocation he worked for a short time in Dubrovnik. Considerably longer (17 years) he served in Trieste as priest, professor and public private teacher. More than ten years he spent in Rome as a canon in the Croatian Institute of St. Jerome, on the basis of a benefice from the year 1807. He also occupied himself with the literary work, primarily with poetry in the classical spirit, as well as with translation and linguistics.
