Summary/Abstract: Global migration trends depend on two important considerations, namely, the wish of inhabitants of the developing countries to improve their standard of living by finding better conditions of life, and the demand for workforce as well as the ageing population and decreasing number of inhabitants in the developed countries. This problem also starts to become topical in Latvia. In the near future it is necessary to carry out surveys on the demographic and economic development in Latvia, especially in relation to the EU, in order to develop an appropriate long-term policy.
