Summary/Abstract: Borders that once kept people in now keep them out. This essay won the top prize, in the undergraduate category, in TOL’s recent student writing competition. Entrants were free to choose their topic and style, as long as their essays addressed post-communist transition in Central or Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, or Central Asia. Sagynbaeva is one of two winners of a trip to Prague to attend TOL’s fall conference, 25 Years After: The Challenges of Building the Post-Communist Media and Communication Industries, 20-22 November.
