Summary/Abstract: A quarter-century after the fall of communism, the lives of ambitious young people in Europe’s east and west can seem as different as coffee and green apples. This essay won the top prize, in the graduate category, in TOL’s recent student writing competition. Entrants were free to choose their topic and style, as long as their essays addressed post-communist transition in Central or Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, or Central Asia. Maric is one of two winners of a trip to Prague to attend TOL’s fall conference, 25 Years After: The Challenges of Building the Post-Communist Media and Communication Industries, 20-22 November
