Summary/Abstract: According to Terry Castle, enlightened, aggressive rationalism, fighting with superstitions, has produced a new experience of strangeness and intellectual impasse. For Mladen Dolar this experience, which Freud called the uncanny, is one of the first formations of what we today call modernity. Dolar makes this statement in relation to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a family story precisely about this uncanny homelessness experienced in one’s home. But Shelley’s story expands the meaning of the family home, and seems also to be criticising the ideals of the French Revolution: freedom, equality and brotherhood which, according to David Hirsch, become monstrous in this story.
