Poetics of Irrationalism in A. H. Tammsaare’s Work

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the work of A. H. Tammsaare (1878–1940) from the aspect of irrationality that has not been paid much attention to yet. Some elements of irrationalism were pointed out in a few longer articles published on the occasion of the writer’s 60th birthday. The merely budding reception shoot was cut off already in 1940 as the topic was scorned during the Soviet occupation. This significant layer in Tammsaare’s literary work, however, has been disregarded also in Estonia that has regained its independence.
