Summary/Abstract: This text is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of prof. Asen Kartalov’s birth. It analyses his half century lecturing activity in few universities in Plovdiv, and this exactly makes him doyen of the university philosophical college in the country. The thesis that prof. Kartalov unostentatiously but persuasively defends the meaning of dedication to a voluntarily accepted mission of dispersing knowledge, though most of the Bulgarians disparage it, is expressed here. His autobiographical book “I have lived inconspicuously” which title is borrowed from the famous phrase of Epicurus is reviewed in the article. Its subtitle – “book about the things in life” – tells the readers that it concerns events from different layers of its author’s life.
