Summary/Abstract: The rapid fall of dominoes in Eastern Europe took world public opinion by surprise, and analysts everywhere are still arguing about the causes and consequences of that unusual historical development. I propose to present in this paper my own assessment. To begin with, I recall that three years ago, in an article in The International Herald Tribune (3 September 1987) I rebuked those who were emphasizing the stubborn resistance of Eastern European nations to the drive for change initiated in Moscow by Mikhail Gorbachev, and, on the basis of a different appraisal of the situation, I concluded with a prophetic sentence: "By 1990 a new political generation will be in command all over Eastern Europe."
