First Sketch of the Problem of Identity-Formation in the Rhodope Mountains in Greece

Summary/Abstract: The paper is based on extended field work among the Pomaks of Northern Greece and deals with the problem of identity-building. The geographical and historical background has to be taken into account, as well as economic changes and modernization. Apart from the outside definitions of the ethnic group, there are internal segmentations of the Pomak population according to religion (sunni/kizilbashi), to the role of women (“openness”/“closedness”), and to the importance of silence, the evil eye, and magic.
