Summary/Abstract: An examination of the relationship between the media and civil society is provided by Peter Gross, in an extract from his forthcoming book. Most commentators on the media scene are critical of the extent to which journalists in central and eastern Europe are supportive of civil society, but Gross seeks to take a different view, arguing that media reporting of NGOs and wider civil society, including political parties, has been both fair and encouraging to the development of such organisations and their ability effectively to articulate their views. As the decade of the transition has worn on, journalists have acquired greater skills and, notwithstanding a certain lack of professionalism, have become incrementally better performers on reporting political events.
