PERSPECTIVES ON POLICY ISSUES STRENGTHENING THE EUROPEAN SECURITY AND DEFENCE WORLDWIDE

Summary/Abstract: In response to international crises, the European Union must have the capacity to act autonomously, supported by credible military forces, the decision means for their use and the willingness to do so. The period of unprecedented peace and stability across Europe from late 20th and early 21st century is due to the European Union. It is one that not only generated a high level of economic development on the continent, but also a new approach to security, based on peaceful settlement of disputes and multilateral international cooperation through joint institutions. Obviously, the US played a crucial role in ensuring European security by supporting both the European integration and the security commitments to Europe taken within NATO.
