Summary/Abstract: The article aims to offer a multi-dimensional perspective on the course of political careers using neo-institutional perspective. There is an agreement that that institutions determine the way of doing politics. Their shape, detailed formal rules and procedures , affect the results of poli- tical competition. Effective use of the institutions and political structures gives certain individuals a chance for binding, in an intentionally and well-thought-out way, their careers with the world of politics. As a result of the parliamentary elections in Poland between 1989 and 2007 more than three hundred people became deputies or senators, each at least three times. This indicates the presence of a category of professional politicians who repeatedly and effectively used the tools available to them to be able to participate in political decision-making in the long term. It is impossible, however, to explain the trajectory of their careers without reference to a higher level of analysis – elements of the political system (electoral and party). On the other hand, explanations of the functioning of the political system, without an element of professional politicians’ careers paths’ descriptions are not able to explain the functioning of the party and electoral system.
