Summary/Abstract: In the entire post-communist sphere, a strong wave of nationalism and ethnic rancour has emerged. However, the invocation of ethnicity to explain social phenomena is not confined to perceptions of such violent conflagrations. It is much more pervasive. Indeed, it can sometimes be employed as a way of referring to almost any kind of social group. Ethnicity in Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe is more or less an accepted label. But what kind of problems and social and political processes are hidden beneath its surface?
