Summary/Abstract: This contribution attempts to briefly summarize the most important issues related to the EU policy towards countries in Eastern Europe, covering its development after the Treaty of Amsterdam, as a background to the upcoming Visegrad countries (V4) EU accession. Several considerably new issues affecting the current relationship of V4 countries to their eastern neighbors have been brought up within the EU accession processes, and not all of them are in line with the interests of the Visegrad countries. The V4 countries have started a discussion on the Eastern Policy of the enlarged Union in order to analyze not only prospective contributions of new member states, but also the very concept of the EU policy towards its eastern neighbors.
