Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with two forms of the traditional Christmas ritual of going round carol-singing in the region of Sofia: in amateur performances and in commercial environment. The author has gathered information during fieldwork in 2008–2010 through surveys and interviews. The analysis of functional, structural and performing particularities of the explored ritual repertoire (vocal, oral and dancing) allows for the establishing of a number of innovations, the best part of which are common to the entire traditional ritual system in the days of its collapse. These innovations are related exclusively to the institutionalisation of folklore in the area of amateur activities.
