Summary/Abstract: The paper highlights the issue of development of church music in Plovdiv as part of the doctoral thesis “The spread of Russian choral polyphony in Bulgarian church music in the period between the Liberation and 1944”. In this particular case, it was prompted historically by the fact that Plovdiv of all the Bulgarian cities believed to be cultural hubs in the period of Bulgarian National Revival seemed to boast the highest concentration of cultural life at the time. Here are arguments holding a lot of weight: at the time, some of this country’s greatest figures in the fields of culture and arts lived in Plovdiv; as regards development of music art, the singing society established in Plovdiv is believed to be the founder of Bulgarian singing societies, underlying today’s Bulgarian Choral Union, which happened to be the prime mover in the development of choral activities in Plovdiv in all their aspects, including church music. Extant archives allow for drawing conclusions for a comprehensive study of the spread and influence of Russian choral polyphony on Bulgarian church music with the major one as regards this particular case being that what is typical of Plovdiv church choral polyphony is a wide Russian repertoire without any explicit accents, filtered through individual choral choices and tradition, retaining though the specifics of its past until these days.
