Summary/Abstract: Aurel Lazăr was born in Oradea, in August 5/17, 1872. Having done his apprenticeship around some great militants, Aurel Lazăr’s evolution in the national movement followed an upward route. In the year 1901 he became a member in the Executive Committee of the National Romanian Party, consolidating its militant wing. Proving real political qualities, active and full of energy, Aurel Lazăr is nominate the candidate of the National Romanian Party for the parliamentary elections of the years 1906 and 1910, in the electoral circle of Tinca, the county of Bihor At the end of the war, Aurel Lazăr entered the political elite of the Transylvanian Romanians. Inferring the favorable juncture and the first gesture the Romanians had to make, Aurel Lazăr was one of the initiators and the organizer of the memorable Conference of the Executive Committee which took place in Oradea, on October 12, 1918 and which was held in his house. On the occasion of that Conference, Aurel Lazăr was elected a member in the restricted Bureau of the Executive Comity, and a few days later he was among the six delegates of the National Romanian Party, who, together with some other six social-democratic Romanians, formed the Central National Council of Arad. As a delegate of the Central National Romanian Council, Aurel Lazăr founded and led, till the middle of December 1918, the National Romanian Council of Oradea and Bihor county, the supreme forum of the Romanian national councils and guards of the county. It was the period while he tried hard and even managed to gather around himself all the Romanian strengths of Bihor and to guide them towards the city of Alba-Iulia, where he made all the necessary preparations for the National Assembly. Aurel Lazăr was one of those who made the Great Union of December 1, 1918, one of the “parents” of the new country. As a part of the Central National Romanian Council, he contributed to finalizing the Motion of the Union, which was to be exposed in front of the Assembly. He prepared and led the deputation of Bihor county at the Grand National Assembly of Alba-Iulia. He was in the Union Hall, among the 1228 delegates, being at the same time one of the orators in the Assembly and speaking to the crowed which had gathered on the Romans’ Plateau, both from the official rostrum and from other unofficial ones. As he returned from Alba-Iulia, Aurel Lazăr started preparing himself for taking over the administration of the county and for receiving the Romanian army.
