God is One and Only - the fundamental principle of Islam

Summary/Abstract: This paper expounds the basic elements of Islamic teachings on God. It begins with a general discussion of Islamic belief in the One and Only God (tawhid) and its significance for Muslim religious, ritual and cultural life. It continues with a consideration of individual features of the divine Nature, beginning with His transcendence (tanzih), through His beautiful Names and attributes, to His immanence (tashbih). The author then sets out the contribution of the classical schools of Kalam (theology) in conceiving the fundamental dimensions of the divine Nature. Finally, the paper deals with the rational proofs of the existence of God that evolved in the famous schools of classical scholars such as Abu Hanifah, al-Ghazali, al-Farabi, Ar-Razi and others.
