Summary/Abstract: The primary aim of economic restructuring is a good structural transformation and the steering of economic structure towards its optimum. The optimal economic structure implies equal and harmonious development of all sectors, which will positively impact economic development, employment, productivity, and competitiveness, and generally improve the total performance of national economy. Given that the economic structure of Serbia is far from optimal and that the industrial sector in a way eroded over time, the stimulation of the development of this sector is extremely important for several reasons: industry is the driving force of development, but also of the primary and tertiary sectors (both manufacturing- and income-dependent). This paper highlights the importance of the industrial sector for Serbian economy, and identifies the key industrial branches, the proper analysis of which would lead to improvement of almost all macroeconomic indicators. In addition, the paper specifically analyzes the pre-crisis period in order to draw precise conclusions and give useful suggestions towards identifying propulsive industry branches.
