Summary/Abstract: Johann Baptist Metz, following the lead of his master, Karl Rahner, has created new a political theology, which can be considered one of the most important Christian reflections on the postmodern age. His last study, Memoria Passions, published in 2006, provides a great synthesis of his oeuvre, stating that human history is a history of passion, in which Christianity represents the religion that turns to the suffering and the needy. As a challenge for the pluralistic and secular public, Metz outlines a quite provocative approach to the past, contrasting anamnesis without dates and deadlines, on the one hand, and Biblical memory as an apocalyptic view of time without end, on the other. After the trauma of Auschwitz, Metz urges Christian theology to return to her Biblical heritage and hear the cry of the suffering. Similarly, the Church has to become the community of the compassio, conveying the everlasting of God to the reality of our time.
