The Cult of Literature in Psychoanalysis
Author(s): Ferenc ErősSubject(s): Literary Texts

Summary/Abstract: The essay deals with a special aspect of the relationship between psychoanalysis and literature. On the one hand, it focuses on the cultic reading of Freud, as exemplified in some works of the Hungarian poets Attila József and Dezső Kosztolányi. On the other hand, the author examines the cultic elements in the psychoanalytic reading of some literary works, such as Carl Spitteler’s imago, and Georg Groddeck‘s The Soul Seeker. The latter became one of the sources of Sándor Ferenczi’s assimilation of the role of an “enfant terrible”: a counter-cult against the cult of the “great man” and a revolt against Sigmund Freud as a father figure.
