Research on socio-spatial differentiation in the context of decennial Censuses

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this work was to propose some improvements in the way the Population and Housing Census data are used in Lithuania. The article tackles the problem of insufficient knowledge of Lithuania’s socio-spatial structure and offers conceptual and practical solutions. The article presents and evaluates the essential features of Population and Housing Censuses in the UNECE countries. It describes the conditions that led to the current state of knowledge concerning the national socio-spatial structure. The article identifies the main obstacles to changes and offers feasible ways to overcome them. Finally, the sub-type level Census classification for the post-communist countries is presented and the main aspects of international practices are compared. The article invites researchers interested in the exploration of the national sociospatial structure to coordinate their actions (1), to collaborate more actively with the Statistics Lithuania (2), to take measures in order to guarantee the comparability of 2001 and 2011 decennial Censuses small-area data (3), to introduce high spatial resolution social statistics methods into academic curricula of the universities (4), to monitor the impact of the new data on the politics and the development of democracy (5).
