Summary/Abstract: The study attempts to determine if Chinese Mandarin has the potential to become a new lingua franca. Both arguments for and against are presented, taking into account a wide set of linguistic, social, demographic, political, and economic factors behind the popularity of Chinese Mandarin. The study will prove especially useful for anyone dealing with sociolinguistics, globalization and the linguistic trends in the contemporary world.
