Solar Symbolism in The Medieval Liturgical Poetry

Summary/Abstract: The article, devoted to solar symbolism in the medieval liturgical poetry, touches one of the most important issues in the medieval symbolism: metaphysics of the light. The symbolism of the sun in many of its functions is closely connected with the symbolism of the light. In the liturgical poetry the sun belongs to the most often used – parallel to the moon and precious stones – symbols linked to the light. The symbol of the sun is rooted in tradition of solar and philosophical-theological speculations taken over by Christianity from the antiquity. Its basis constitute biblical texts and the earlier Platonian and Neo-platonian tradition of philosophy. Christianity gave it a deep theological sense. In the medieval poetry, the sense of symbol refers to Christ, Mary and Saints. The aspect of Christ and Mary as the symbol of the sun is most developed. The deep theological sense of the symbol of sun is proved by the fact that it was used to introduce and represent such mysteries of Christian faith as the Holy Trinity, Incarnation and Birth of the Son of God, the Transfiguration, and the Resurrection.
