Summary/Abstract: Tomas Venclova has written quite a number of ekphrastic poems. Ekphrasis is usually defined as a description or re-creation of a piece of work of the fine arts (like painting, graphics, sculpture, architecture, etc.) in a piece of writing. In the poem “Café de ľAlcazar” Vincent van Gogh’s painting “A Night Café” (1888) is described, representing a real café of the town Arl – “Alcazar” café. The article is meant for the detailed analysis of the abovementioned poem as an ekphrastic piece of work. In the analysis most of the attention is paid to the ekphrastic aspects related to mimesis (reflection) theory, explaining how the second and third degree reflection is merged in the poem and what is the connection between them. Also, the following aspects are under consideration: a) what interpretation of van Gogh’s painting Venclova presents, b) how the poet integrates van Gogh’s biographic details as well as political-historical reality details into the ekphrastic description of the painting, c) how the description of the specific painting is related to the descriptive format of all Venclova’s poetry, and other questions.
