The Seamen's Family. Features from Concrete Research Projects

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses topics of life of seamen's families arising from problems in the relationship with their wives, parents and children as a source of contradicting feelingslike love and anxiety, confidence and sense of guilt, responsibility and tension as a result of developments in the family while away for a long period of time experienced by most seamen. The socio-psychological analysis of the seamen's occupation views the basic problems of their family life, the inability of the seamen's families to provide for their members the necessary adaptational reserves and mechanisms for dealing with the problems of marriage and parental interaction. The often lack of emotional cohesion among the spouses, the break down of the mechanisms of family cooperation put the seamen in a position of frustration not only vis-a-vis their families and children but their professional obligations, too.
