Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the functioning of the Estonian theme and the Tolstoyan element in Jaan Kross’ novel „Professor Martens’ Departure”, considered on the background of the general compositional structure of the novel. Compositional unity of the novel has been achieved by developing some micro-plots (recurrent or parallel with the main events depicted), by using leitmotifs, and by specifically structuring the set of characters (the main character being juxtaposed of contrasted with characters representing this or that aspect of his inner life). Analysing certain leitmotifs of the novel (fear, relief) that could be termed as Tolstoyan it is shown how Jaan Kross has related the late-Tolstoyan tradition with the Estonian culture at the end of 19th beginnig of the 20th century.
