Summary/Abstract: Studies have shown that the belief in a just world is related to the victim's evaluation. We make the distinction between the implicit and explicit belief in a just world and, by using the Implicit Association Test and we introduce a new method to measure the implicit form. The threat to the belief in a just world was manipulated and three types of reaction to a victim were assessed: derogation, behavioral and characterial blame. The strategy preferred to protect the belief in a just world was the behavioral blaming. In a low impact situation, the explicit belief in a just world is a better predictor of the victim's negative evaluation. As predicted, in the high threat situation, strong believers in a just world reacted more negatively toward the victim.
