Summary/Abstract: The monograph describes the history of one of the most mysterious and little-known pages of Russian history - the Russian-Byzantine commission (1918-1930). Having united almost all Byzantinists and scholars of the Christian East, this commission became a unique synthesis of a research institution (with many formal signs of a research institution of the Academy of Sciences) and a system of mutual assistance of scientists most of whom were out of work in the first years of the Soviet rule. This research studies the most interesting example of adaptation of the educated people of tsarist Russia to the dramatic situation of the 1920s and presents abilities to self-organization in the transitional period.
