Summary/Abstract: In summary, it can be stated that the participatory institutions were established in Hungary in a period when the social, economic and political conditions mounted severe obstacles to their growth. We will summarise the experiences of works councils in the first part of this article by assessing their relationships with other parties in the workplace; in the second part, we cover the career context of the ‘successful’ works councils; and, at the end, we describe the institutional network which supports them.
