Summary/Abstract: The development of the road network and settlement system of Transdanubia, Slavonia and Transylvania in the Árpád period (1000–1301) was not only affected by natural environment (relief, waters, vegetation, and soil), but also by cultural landscape inherited from the Roman times. In my paper I investigate the medieval perception and use of Roman road remains found in the territory of former Pannonia with special regard to the northern part of the former province. I analyze hodonyms used for Roman roads in medieval written sources and early modern maps to demonstrate which features (material, embankment, stone monuments along the roads) of ancient road remains were so conspicuous to the medieval population to call them after. In addition, I compare the Roman and medieval layout of streets and squares within two towns (Scarbantia/Sopron and Savaria/Szombathely), as well as the direction of main roads outside the towns to find out how the elements of the Roman infrastructure were re-used in the Middle Ages and to what extent they determined the topography of medieval Hungary.
