The Role of the Unknown In Construction and Development of Identity

Summary/Abstract: The article takes up the issues connected with the role of the unknown (the Foreigner, foreignness) in construction and development of identity of a subject of cognition in Jacek Dukaj’s prose. The subject matter has been discussed in two aspects: first, of confrontation with the foreignness external to “Me” both in the subjective form (the Other – human or the Foreigner – representative of another species) and objective or mental form (foreignness as a way of thought, existence, feeling). The second aspect is recognition of foreignness in oneself, both in the context of a social group and communion with the Foreigner/Other, conscious or not. Important questions are whether we form our identity by ourselves or it is imposed and modelled by the society and the world we live in, as well as about the dilemmas of “Me”, connected with definition of own identity in contact with the Unknown.
