Summary/Abstract: The article discusses Germany’s participation and role in the debate on the future of European integration which accelerated with the onset of the 21st century. German conceptions of the development of European integration and the EU target system as a federation caused widespread debate in Europe and subsequently led to the initiation of work on drafting a constitutional treaty. It eventually turned out to be Germany’s failure as the Constitution for Europe was abandoned after negative results of referenda in France and the Netherlands in 2005. Crisis in the eurozone was yet another factor that sparked the debate on the need of systemic and institutional changes in the EU. Germany consistently asserts its slogan mehr Europa as the sole remedy that can enable the EU to overcome the crisis and give momentum to European integration processes.
