Summary/Abstract: Beside the religious (Catholic) aspect which pervades the Spanish theatre, there are new themes specific to the mentality of the Iberian people: the sense of honour, the exacerbation of the idea of chivalry, the law of vengeance, the pathetic taste for death, the desire for adventure, the superstition of glory. The type of Castilian present in the literary works is made up of virtues as well as flaws: courage, chivalry, fidelity, loyalty, the sense of honour, devotion towards country and traditions, but also a inclination towards murder and exaggerated pride. One often comes across violent passions or brutal acts which are justified as acts of defence or justice.
