Émile Durkheim’s search for the essence of the family

Summary/Abstract: Émile Durkheim’s texts concerning marriage and family are hardly known. There are a few reasons for that situation, e.g. their dispersion and the lack of translations. In this article the author discuses three Durkheim’s texts which have not been translated into Polish so far: Introduction à la sociologie de la famille, La famille conjugale and Le divorce par consentement mutual. In each of them Durkheim indicated what in his view was the essence of the family, namely, the function of guaranteeing social cohesion. In the second part of the article the author undertakes one of the key issues in Durkheim’s argumentation, regarding the growing role of the state in the organization of family life. The evolution of the family prevents it from fulfilling its traditional task – being a social keystone. It is the state which takes over that task and carries it out using the means of pedagogy.
