Summary/Abstract: The understanding of the categories of the silence, the monologue and the dialogue is connected with opinions valuing in the contemporary culture. The positive value is attributed in these opinions to the dialogue as to the way of solving conflicts. The monologue and the silence are perceived negatively as forms of incomplete communication. In the consequence of these opinions the dialogue is expected in every circle of social life, in universities also. The author of the article tries to answer the question if such valuing is correct. He analyses three types of the dialogue: informative, negotiative and hermeneutical, which is focused on getting deeper understanding and which should be carried out in universities. Analyses show that the dialogue may not only help, but also make it difficult to deepen the understanding of the object of analyses. It can emotionally engage and inflict that the participant of the dialogue is not free in his coming to the truth. Readiness on the receiving of the truth is easier to achieve in silence, especially when the external silence is connected with internal silence, and not with the internal discussion. In effect, the article shows the internal relation of dialogue and silence and it indicates that in universities there must be the time of the silence and the time of the dialogue.
