Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzes the work of Nicolae Ionescu as professor of world history at the University of Iasi, since his appointment in 1860 until his retirement in 1892. The main topics on which we based our research are: Ionescu’s academic background, his institutional activity in the University, the courses he taught, his historical conceptions and readings, the books and articles he wrote and, lastly, the opinion his contemporaries had of him. We examined the scientific content of the courses taught by professor Ionescu as well as his academic evolution out of a purely administrative perspective. Regarding this last point we have selected some events considered to be relevant to his entire activity without the intention of effectuating an exhaustive research in this regard. His contribution to the scientific world and the impact that his writings as professor had on his contemporaries are other aspects that we were trying to elucidate in the text. As to the readings that were the basis of his professional training, the study focuses on the authors and the books that played an important role in the defining of Ionescu’s historical creed. The conclusion of our analysis converges to the idea that the scientific and professional work of Nicolae Ionescu was extensively influenced by his political activity. Despite his academic training, the assumption that he has not brought any notable contribution to the Romanian historiography can be confirmed.
