Summary/Abstract: The article asserts that extra-marital relations could function as a ladder for upward social mobility, allowing one to obtain a certain position and wealth. Drawing on a wide range of sources, the author examines the strategies of private patronage which have been used for several decades in everyday life of Russian noble salons.
