Individualism in a Globalising World: Polish Rural Youth and EU Enlargement

Summary/Abstract: The results of the research concerning social orientations (mentalities) among rural youth are analyzed in this paper. The authors assume the interdependency between social mentality and social institutions. On the other hand, social institutions are a very strong factor shaping the state of social consciousness. Basing on such general statements we have focused on various aspects of social orientations among rural youth with a special stress on individualism. Such an orientation has been diversified resulting from several factors. The so-called cultural capital seems to be the most important issue among them. The authors argue that the higher level of individualism that has been the main content of the investigated cultural capital the stronger impact that has been shaped basic decisions concerning the future of rural youth.
