Summary/Abstract: Three of Gary‘s novels, Éducation européenne, La Promesse de l’aube, and La vie devant soi, might be called formative novels. Through various narrative schemes they present the embellishments of the initiation and the dramatism of the situation. But they eschew the heroic model that arises out of the run-of-the-mill initiation scheme and achieve intertextuality using allusion, masked references, and parody-like treatment. Gary does not base himself on one or another traditional text performing the intertextual role. The context of popular literature that he employs not only meets the young hero‘s spiritual needs but also provides the narrated story, often autobiographical, with a more universal dimension, gives it a power of generalization, and connects the author with readers from various epochs and various countries.
