Summary/Abstract: The characteristics of Rachmaninoff’s piano playing are apparent from his very first works. At age 18, Rachmaninoff composed having the benefit of the advanced pianism, strongly influenced by Chopin and Liszt, that he already possessed. His unusual hand span permitted him to work out chords in wide positions, spread across the whole keyboard. Rachmaninoff’s music remains tonal, but the closeness to the modality of Russian folk music gives it a characteristic imprint. A piece’s musical dynamic is structured in such a way as to lead to a climax towards which the whole build-up of the piece converges. The musical discourse is distributed orchestrally. Through their rendering by two pianos, the layers of sound create an impression of wide space. The Suite op. 5 blends music with images that are poetic (mottos) and pictorial (Tableaux).
