Summary/Abstract: After his ascent on the Episcopal seat of Rome in 1198, Pope Inocent III set in mind to organize a new crusade in the East after the failure of the third crusade, in order to free Jerusalem. The present study illustrates the establishment of the core of the fourth crusade army under the rule of Count Thibaut of Champagne and, upon his death, under the command of Marquis Boniface of Montfer-rat. The crusaders regarded Boniface as the ideal Christian knight, and he was held in high esteem not only by the papacy, but also by the King of France and the House of Hochenstanfen in Germany. He managed to unify the Western Christian forces around him.
