This part focuses on the different forms in which Polish is thought there and on the presence of mass media in Polish in Donetsk – an issue which until now has not been the subject of linguistic research. Since 2007/2008 the number of people who would like to use Polish has increased, mostly due to the fact that the Poles from Donetsk wish to obtain the Polish Card. Currently the Polish language has a symbolic, cognitive and economic values in Donetsk. The high symbolic value of Polish is visible mostly among the eldest generation. The cognitive value can be observed among the middle-aged people and the youth, since economic considerations are important to every young person. The factor which strengthens the prestige of this minority language is its possibly broad usage, the need to communicate in this language that is felt by its users.
