The Causes and Consequences of Barbarisation in Late Roman Army

Summary/Abstract: The barbarisation is usually seen as one of the causes of the fall of the Western part of the Roman Empire. In his paper, the author tries to reevaluate this problem, by assesing both the structure and composition of the late Roman army and its outward demonstration (appearance of the soldiers, tactics). On the basis of these facts the author realises that the barbarisation was rather a consequence of the weakening empire than one of the primary causes of the fall.
