Summary/Abstract: The study describes and analyses two great passing of generations in the Hungarian literature in the 19th century. The symbolic event of the first one is the meeting of Ferenc Kazinczy and Károly Kisfaludy in 1828 when the neoclassic literary ideal was replaced by the romantic attitude and aesthetics of the young generation in a relatively peaceful way. The characteristic feature of the second one is the fact that it didn't actually happen. In the second half of the century the new generation couldn't enforce its platform and couldn't conquer the posts of power of the literary scene because of the authority of the popular national school and especially of János Arany and the aggressive literary policy of Pál Gyulay, and so the passing of generations occured only at the beginning of the 20th century when Nyugat, the new literary organ was founded.
